Form VII – Shakespeare in the Classroom

Forms VII A, B and C have been working on three different projects. The springboard for this project was the video SHAKESPEARE IN THE CLASSROOM.

After watching the first 25’ of the video, teachers assigned the tasks to the different groups  .

  • Group 1 dealt with Shakespeare’s Life – The man and the poet. Historical background.Students had to prepare a presentation on what is known about his life and his work. Explain why he became so famous.
  • GROUP 2 worked on Costumes and Clothes in Elizabethan times.Students played the role of designers studying costumes and clothes in Elizabethan times. They had to  describe what people and actors wore and how their clothes showed social status and power.
  • GROUP 3 was in charge of building the Model of the Globe. The aim of this project was not only to build the model of the globe, but also raise students’ awareness of theatres in the 16th Century in England, describe The Globe theatre, what the audience was like and reacted at that time, plays performed, role of actors, music and dance, so on and so forth.

This was an ambitious project and not an easy task. To achieve these  project’s goals, students had to watch the mentioned video above, while watching it, they had to jot down notes of the info related to their topic and bring the material needed to build the globe.

Little by little, kids started building the model of the globe and let their imagination flow and got further away…They started adding other buildings and important British icons to their models, such as the River Thames, The Big Ben and some ships in the river among other things.

Once the model was finished, students had to prepare their oral presentations to describe the Globe and back up their oral expositions with the information that had been found in the video and in the book provided as sources by the teachers.
